Why You Need Acupuncture Malpractice Insurance
If you are going to start your own acupuncture practice, then you absolutely need acupuncture malpractice insurance. This is something you should be told about during your education, although it doesn't hurt to mention it again. Let's face it -- we live in a litigious world. There are many people out there who will sue just because they think they can. If for some reason you were sued by a patient and did not have malpractice insurance, you could lose everything you own. This is not to say that you will be sued, or you will make a mistake, or you will be guilty of malpractice. However, it's always better to be safe than sorry.
There are a variety of places where you can purchase this type of insurance. One great place to start is the American Acupuncture Council. Since the 1980s, this organization has offered insurance for practitioners. There are a variety of other companies in the United States and around the world that offer asset protection for practitioners. It is absolutely crucial that you have some kind of coverage. If you were sued, you could lose your business, your home, and your life savings. Insurance coverage protects you in this event, and gives you a way to protect your assets while fulfilling any legal obligations.
It's a good idea to have a lawyer who specializes in alternative medicine or at least has a good grasp of the subject. Every business owner should have a lawyer on call, and an acupuncture practitioner is no exception. Your attorney can handle not only malpractice suits, but can advise you on many aspects of doing business. With good legal representation and the right insurance policy, you can focus on the important aspects of doing your job instead of all the legalities. Legal matters can be tricky and are best left to the professionals. After all, would a lawyer give acupuncture? Of course not. Therefore, an acupuncturist shouldn't try to be their own lawyer.
Acupuncture malpractice insurance protects your best interests in the event of a worst case scenario. Hopefully, you'll never need to use it. Acupuncture is usually a very safe practice that has been used for thousands of years. Most people don't even experience any discomfort during a session. If you receive the proper education and training, there is no reason why you should have any problems with your clients. However, unforseen things do happen and some people are simply looking for a reason to file suit. With insurance and legal representation, you will be protected just in case!
